"The sculpture “Take Flight” follows the flight path of a falling seed. The simple spiral motion, engineered by nature, helps the mature seed travel away from the shade of the parent tree when it is ready. The wing of the seed provides a safe, soft landing and positions it upright to make sure the seed has a greater chance of success.
The sculpture projects that The College is the tree, sharing the concept of belonging and equality for all students, nurturing them until the season when they are ready to take flight. The flight path shows that although all students are offered equal opportunities, they are individuals, like each seed, and will spread out through their flight to find their own place to grow.
The pattern on the seed in the sculpture shows students holding hands in unity and also being supported on the shoulders of other students.
